Vanessa Jones is one of the Counselors in Friday the 13th: The Game, and is nicknamed "The Athletic Girl".[1]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Vanessa Jones is not only the fastest character in the game, she's capable of maintaining her speed for a long time thanks to her high stamina. As such, she is the best counselor for serving as a decoy to lead Jason away from the rest of her team. The irony is she has to run solo to fulfill her role sometimes, despite being a team-oriented counselor.

Inexperienced Vanessa players will create several problems for their team. For starters, hanging out with counselors who specialize in stealth will gardner unwanted attention since Vanessa makes a great deal of noise while moving. Many players also tend to overestimate her ability to escape Jason; he does, after all, possess two teleportation abilities (Morph and Shift). Players therefore must learn to avoid exposing their teammates in hiding, as well as making sure to map out several escape routes before Jason shows up. She may be able to outrun him, but skilled Jason players will know how to outsmart her.

Once she finds a group of counselors, Vanessa has two roles she fulfills very well: a speedy part runner or a noisy decoy. However, if she serves as the part runner, there's a chance she will reveal to Jason an objective of interest where people might be camping nearby. Therefore, her primary role should be acting as a decoy: get Jason's attention away from everyone else as soon as possible to stall for time. That's not to say she's a terrible part runner, but her group must be ready to fight Jason, and run from him, should he discover the objective Vanessa is gathering parts for. Once Jason knows the team's plan he will typically ignore Vanessa, and hunt down the slower teammates who are camping near the chosen objective.

For coordinated teams, it might be better for Vanessa to drop parts off at a different location. This way a stealth character can camp the area, and deliver the parts so Jason doesn't know exactly which objective Vanessa's team is trying to fix. This plan can help your team conserve jerry cans if another objective suddenly becomes a more attractive choice at the time (for instance, fixing the four seat car instead of the two seater). However, because of how chaotic a game can become, speed might be a better option, meaning Vanessa should just deliver the parts to the objective herself. It all depends on the team you're working with.

While running out in the open as the decoy/part runner, remember the basic rules of keeping your fear in check. Do not hesitate to turn on the flashlight; your terrible stealth combined with your low composure will make it easy for Jason to find you, and depending on the situation that might even be the point. Stay near houses if possible, and look for ones you can duck into for safety when Jason discovers you. It's far better to stall for time by forcing Jason to break into a locked building, rather than exhausting yourself out in the open where you will eventually be caught.

When choosing Vanessa, make a mental note of whether or not one of your teammates selected the counselor Brandon. These two work together in tandem extremely well: both are fast, and both make a lot of noise, which makes them suitable partners. In this case, Vanessa should act as a part runner, whereas Brandon escorts her as a bodyguard. This duo can make life difficult for Jason to prevent an objective from receiving the parts it needs. Working alongside another Vanessa player isn't a bad choice either, since Vanessa can put up a decent fight with her strength and luck stats reaching a middle ground.

Vanessa isn't an easy counselor to master, but her role in the team is crucial for buying her teammates the time they desperately need to complete an objective. You shouldn't pick this counselor if you want someone who can survive on their own. Instead, choose her if you feel your calling is to help others.

When arming yourself, try to locate weapons with high stun potential, as well as firearms should you be lucky enough. Keep in mind while acting as a part runner she will be unarmed at times; pocket knives are an essential since her low composure will make it difficult to wriggle free of Jason's clutches. Firecrackers can also be used to assault Jason while holding a part, although this requires careful aim.

Keep your wits about you, and above all else, don't run with reckless abandon. Jason has more than enough tools to catch you, but should you plan ahead of time, you can frustrate him to no end.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Vanessa represents the "Athletic Girl" trope, even wearing a jogging outfit to boot.

She is noticeably fit with a toned body shape, and has tied her black hair into a ponytail, all of which is characteristic of an experienced athlete who specializes in cardio exercises.
